With three campuses ASA College prepares its students for successful careers in the health care, criminal justice, information technology, and business sectors. Thanks to the school’s accelerated programs, students can finish their degrees in just 16 months. We met with ASA College officials to discuss study tips for the school’s fast-paced courses.
Q: What study skills should students develop when they begin taking classes at ASA College?
A: In addition to time management, task prioritization, and overall organization, speed reading ranks as a very valuable skill.
Q: Can you tell me about some of the techniques for speed reading?
A: One of the keys to speed reading is learning to skim efficiently. As students develop their speed reading skills, they start to see that some portions of the text hold more substance. Through practice, students can learn how to focus on the important information. Training yourself to read in blocks rather than word by word also improves reading times. Eventually, speed readers can read a whole sentence or paragraph at a time.
Q: I imagine this can be a frustrating skill to learn. Do you have any advice?
A: Sure, students who track their progress often find that they have improved their reading times significantly, so time yourself when you start training and then again after several weeks. It also helps to use your hand to guide your eye down the page to avoid rereading and to devote all your attention to the task at hand.
